The vast majority of studies on the relationship between religion and crime have focused on the role of religion in crime prevention, while the effect of religious motivations in committing crimes has been neglected. However, today these crimes account for a high volume of criminal offenses reported in the news around the world, especially in Muslim countries. Religiously motivated crime is “any criminal conduct in which the sole or principal motive for committing the act is religious orders or the protection of the whole of religion.” To identify religiously motivated crime, analytical issues are needed, because according to this definition, examples of such crimes vary. It should be noted that the divine religions themselves do not cause offenses; rather, what causes crime in this area is religious motivation that can be transmitted or interpreted in the wrong ways. Religiously motivated crimes differ from other crimes in various fields such as the variety of instances, frequency, importance, typology of motivation, and so on, and this study seeks to analyze them.
