The legal term and institution of alteration of debt is handed down from Roman law, surviving in many legal systems of different countries. However, there is no trace of this institution in Islamic jurisprudence and law. In Iranian law, this institution is adopted in Article 292 of the Iranian Civil Code. The present article studies the alteration of debt in terms of the alteration of the creditor in Iranian law and its difference from the cession of claim. These two institutions will also be compared with Egyptian law. The first part deals with the concepts, nature, conditions, and consequences of alteration of debt in terms of alteration of creditor. The second part briefly studies the cession of claim as another institution of satisfaction of obligation. The third part presents a comparative study of these two institutions.
