Human rights are among the issues that have been welcomed by various nations following the ratification of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Since the adoption of any issue at the international level and within Muslim communities is contingent upon understanding its Islamic perspective, it is necessary to study the concept of human rights from this viewpoint. The present article first examines the concept of rights and their correlation with duties. It then addresses certain issues in human studies necessary for understanding human rights, such as the Creator and Lord of human beings, human essence, human nature, the position of human beings in the universal existence, their relationship with the universe, and the ultimate goal of human creation. Finally, human rights from the perspective of Islam are defined as the common, lasting, and stable realities inherent in all humans—those things that human beings possess and should have by virtue of their creation as human beings. These rights are granted to human beings at birth by the Creator.
